Keep Backseats Clean with the Car Seat Protector
I remember back in high school and college when my parents would tell me to clean my room. They thought that mess was bad, but nothing really compares to when you have small children. Small children create a haven for ants with their never-ending mountains of crumbs and remnants.
You think teenagers are bad? Ha! My 6-year-old is a whiz at turning a completely clean room into the kind of room that looks like it belongs to my ex-boyfriend from college. She’s only missing an old crust-filled pizza box to complete the image fully.
I do my best to clean up her room, but I don’t have the time. I work from home and have other kids to take care of on top of that. I wind up bribing her to get the job done which works for maybe an hour and then after that calm clean, there’s a disaster in there again.

The same thing happened to my SUV. I tried and tried and tried to keep it clean. The front is nice and tidy. That’s because I sit there. But the back? Oh man. It winds up looking like a job for the HAZMAT team more often than not.
I grew exhausted trying to pick up the disaster back there. I even appointed her the “backseat ambassador” but she didn’t take her new role in the hierarchy of my kingdom very seriously.
So one day I decided to take the car to have it detailed because I’d rather pay someone to do it than do it myself. I had to take out her booster seat and the two car seats for my littles so they could do a good job. The guys cleaning my car were laughing up a storm because they’d never seen so many animal crackers roaming wild under the seats.

My upholstery was a mess. It looked like years of Pixie sticks had been ground into the backseat and there were stains from juice boxes and milk long past. I was embarrassed. I figured it would be messy, but not like this.
Once the car was all clean, I went to pay the guys and give them a tip for all their hard work. The head guy laughed with me again about the mess he’d uncovered. He said, “Hey look, I have kids too. That’s why I’m laughing so hard. The kind of messes they make is unreal.”
He said my seats would be less worn and stay free of gunk and grime if I used a car seat protector. “What’s that? Like that spray thingie that repells water?” I asked him. He laughed again and said it was a material that attached to the headrest of the backseat and covered the seat back and the bottom of the seat. He said the car seat goes on top of it and it helps keep it from rubbing the fabric as well as stops spills and crumbs.
I was intrigued. I’d never heard of this thing before. “Got a minute? Let me show you,” he said, pulling out his phone. He showed me the Smiinky car seat protector. “This is the one I got. I’ve got two of them actually because I have two kids. These things are great. They hold up forever,” he said.
So I went home and checked out the Smiinky car seat protector. It was made with durable polyester and machine washable. Plus, it had a no-slip backing to it to keep the car seat in place. The guy at the car detailing place told me that car seats wear on the backseat and can really do some major damage. “Add to that a mountain of crumbs like you had and all that friction can really destroy it and ruin your resale value,” he’d said.

I ordered three of the car seat protectors by Smiinky. Once they arrived, I gleefully ran to my SUV to put them in. Thankfully, they’d arrived quickly so not much mess had accumulated since my car was detailed. I attached them to the backseat and secured the booster seat as well as both car seats back in place.
I honestly forgot all about them. I even forgot I had pockets in each of them until my 6-year-old told me she was using them to bring Barbie and her friends in the car. Oh yeah, the car seat protectors, I remembered.
As fate would have it, the kids made me nuts one busy afternoon so I drove through McDonald’s because we were all starving and I was not in the mood to cook anything. My 6-year-old promptly spilled her chocolate milk all over herself and the seat.
Once we got home, I sent her in to change while I got my little ones out. Then I took her booster seat out to clean it. But underneath her seat, the chocolate milk stayed on the car seat protector. It didn’t leak through. So while there was a mess to clean up, the backseat stayed clean. I threw the car seat protector into the wash and it was good as new and ready to go before I had to take the kids anywhere again.
I’m so happy I found the car seat protector. It has saved my backseats from being completely disgusting. Sure, my floors are littered with toys and dolls, but I am no longer driving around a vehicle full of crumbs and ancient spills.
